We Merely Pay The Rent

We are new to this
ancient Land, it cannot
speak to us with ease,
the economies of
our forefathers too
new to understand;

deeds describe our
arrival as recent, we
are undoubtedly the
alienated strangers.

We will not belong in
a way that frees us
of consequence; in
the dawn of each new
day we must aggrieve
with our complicity.

Nothing frees us of
the debt owed the
lessor – indeed, we
merely pay the rent...
