He had this special recipe
which animated his face
whenever he articulated it.
Like a great chef his hands
described the flavours, his eyes
misted in bounteous aromas;
the formula dictated a smidgin
of this, a tad of that and a
poof-teenth (don’t ask me
how much that is!) of the
secret ingredient.
I never knew what the recipe
was actually for, or ever tasted
the finished article – but it’s success,
he said, was practically determined
in the way you held your mouth.
