Kereru (native wood pigeon)

Kereru,
onomatopoeic bird;
Kuku,
Kukupa,
the sound of you
soothes.

Wood pigeon to those who
do not know your name,
friend to Puriri, distributor
of seed; Miro, the Taraire,
Karaka, Nikau and
the Kahikatea.

Gentle bird, so
unafraid, symbol of
purity and peace.
Faithful birds, devoted
to their life mates,
defenceless and
innocent of sin.

May you return…
