The walk around the Orchard said
good things to my young friends,
the conversations we had with the
trees were upbeat and laughter
punctuated friendly exchanges.
We are going to be tree farmers
too, he predicted. Seeing the green
growing so gloriously and knowing
what you’ve done here surely
makes it all the more certain.
I was not ashamed – to me it was
a good thing to hear. Their love
of the land and the trees was clear
and reasoned, like their love of fresh
air, like knowing their rightful place.
When we’ve bought a space out here
you’ll come and teach us how to grow
trees wont you, she said. You’ve made
it seem so easy, but I really imagine it isn’t.
I nodded my head assenting. A good tip,
I said, is to plant them – and wait.
