Breathless

we shared a moment’s intimacy
her upraised bottle said
cheers and her grin agreed

moments before she’d been
chatting with an imaginary
caller on the phone

was it Mama? Impossible to
know but the flow of baby talk
says someone well loved

she hastens through infancy
with intractable sophistication
leaving me breathless
