They lived in four dimensions
easily without any form of
dissonance that I could see
to blanche their dreams,
their fabled antecedents were as
everyday as butter dispensed
on the bread that was baked
in ovens 60 miles away.
Were they masters of their time?
Hell, I don’t know, they never bothered
to say whether it really mattered or if they
simply accepted the way things were
although I suspected there was a more
burgeoning social intelligence afoot than
I saw and I experienced it most poignantly
when two Kuia spoke of my needing a wife.
They knew who would be perfect
to fulfil my life and told me how
they knew. She would be the connection
I needed to enter the spirit world,
the bearer of a key that her genealogy
gave her at birth. I would be
a beneficiary and our
children their future leaders.
When I asked who she was they decreed
her name secret until I agreed
unilaterally. When I looked askance
they said it might happen in this World,
or it might happen in the next.
