Epitome Of Bright Relief

Another day of blinding heat,
the chickens die, the cancer eats
into your soul. At the birdbath on
the garden lawn the epitome of
bright relief ducks and dives and
shakes a glistening spray of water
drops, hops away and chortles thanks –
flies to sheltered space atop her
tree. We watch, pleased to see her
(or is it he) again today, our pretty
princess? butcher bird.

The dogs lie panting in the shade
ever planning to invade the cooler
lies within the house. We watch them
too for they are clever beasts with
ghostlike skills, disappearing as of will
to reappear through doors closed tight
at unsuspecting feet. We look to the
spa where water heat is a steady 33°,
the day’s peak of 42° was reached at
noon – warmish again, to say the least!
