Winning Magic

The sounds of the words made their choices
easy – the meanings were never that clear
but he liked to hear them loud. The chant
he wrote was a proud song to be shouted.

Some of the team thought he was queer –
well, weird anyway, but agreed their team
was distinct and different, with a signature
tune no-one would forget during that year.

Yet they forgot him as soon as the season
ended. With some regret they think back
to the time when their team made the
running, when they bathed in adulation.

Their bard left them for another mountain.
He never understood the game anyway,
all he knew was how to call voices together
in a way that made winning magic.
