The radio in the shadows hides its
strident call to arms in another room,
another time – a different world: I am
secure a wall and two doors away –
in a life less demanding. I cannot hear
the burning voice or the Sieg Heil
chant occasioned by a ceremony
I did not join. But I feel the power of
the words, I imagine the rich sound
reverberating, I know the passion
of fervent-eyed fanatics crying;
I cower – I am powerless too.
