Easy Beat

beat

It was an age when frankness ran
with commonsense and symptoms
shared instead of disagreed – no
plagues of doubt bemused the few
with want to understand, or keep,
a flock in faultless faith’s desire to
shed the shackled dread that bred
a calumny of deep dissent

Debate was free with tacit ban on
flattery alleged, although it read
that satire had the easy beat on
blandishment – & so it seemed a
truth relieved in eyes attuned by
lucid views of simplest actuality
