Tuneful Greetings

MagpieLark

Being discovered is recompense
tuneful greetings received pay
dividends greater than spare
morsels gleaned from the lawn

Three birds rated our restaurant
top of the heap at dawn – while
bemused dogs reclined lazily
preferring sleep before duty

A magpie lark, butcher bird and
immature magpie praised their
leavings openhandedly – sang
melodic thanks for the crumbs

A dog opened an eye, yawned
grandly, rumbled it was much
better than whatever ants did
anyway, relapsed into sleep
