Partisanship And Politics (rev)

Were I not a patriot which of course I am, I would explain
just how the term remains a sticking point within my craw,
how it contains a core of prudish mockery, dissembles
jingoistic claims. But I am and not ashamed.

I love the land, the people and the open places, can’t condone
the crowded spaces, feel concern for those who cannot leave,
grieve for children trapped within regimes that stunt
their growth and drain their youth in cruel hegemony.

Was I just a visitor and open passed to wander where I might,
free to censure as I please, light the fires, feed the flames and
duly leave, I would explain. But I’m here to stay. It’s not the way
that I was born to bear – condemn and sneer and run away.

I’d rather taste the venomed jeers of ultra right-wing cavaliers
whose skins are thin; I’d rather fight those battles here. Yet woe
betide the hasty son who fights alone on borrowed ground – it
is unsound to make a stand without a constituted plan.

Was I but a paying guest I’d gripe and whine and make a fuss
you’d think would never end, I would distend the bulging gut
of shit expatriate disguised and bust it open wide, expose
provincial heresy and swim in it against the tide.

That I can’t – that I must be quiet amuses me and those like me
who own the pool; we’re just as much a cause as case reviewed,
solution placed in reach without the tools, crisis redefined
as such that those we’re said to fear are foist the blame.

And that remains the near and easy explanation; we’re afraid
to be as patriotic as we might, afraid we’d blight the egos in the
crown, our thin-skinned peers who cant and carp and rage at
trite deflections of their petty schemes and piecemeal policies.

The men we once selected to bring change are now afraid of
change with fears as drear as odds against their re-election.
In the aetiology of national wealth, partisanship and politics
are an explosive mix, seen as a harbinger of a failing health.

Survival Room – A New Broom

And so he wasn’t there; Nick Minchin claims he
wasn’t on the stair – and wasn’t there again
today, I wish that he’d stay away. He’s not to
blame says Nick, we focussed fair and square
on outcomes – didn’t understand the game or
see a proper need. John Howard’s not the man
to hang – blame it on a creed disposed to think
of costs and not a “what and why” Apology to
stop the graphic bleeding of a grieving Nation.

So John, he stayed away again – a mean wee
manikin who staged his last hurrah. You’ll note
that Johnny’s sycophants were toxic quiet – an
eerie sleight of lip replaced endemic diarrhoea,
but then, to swim in shit like gravid pigs one
learns to not let waves get big! He’s earned
his place in History, a sad and sorry eyebrow’s
gloom behind horn rims, an unmoved inability
refuting he’s (God forbid) also an Australian.

Electoral Death For Lies

Was easy to address the mob with Johnnie’s lies,
one used the sullen rhetoric of mini-man on verbal
stilts, nitrazepam and facile guilt. If it didn’t calm
the crowd – then try another cut in income tax,
who gave a stuff if interest rates were wracked
as long as they (the mob) were on a spending
spree. It had to end eventually and did when
Johnnie died electoral death for lies he sired
in an uncontested paternity suit.

And now his eager protégé, Malcolm of the
Haute Couture, mouths on with platitudes
in bleats of empty air; the blame for rising
interest rates, he says, is Labor’s Workplace
policy, not bribes with cash for votes they’d
done for years! I ask you mate – what dope’s
he on? It’s bloody good but won’t suffice for
what we’ve learned by listening to the truth
for once – stuff that we ain’t heard in years!

Light And Pithy Puns

Whatever happened to that lying
jerk we knew from Bennelong? The
one with slightly botched recall, wore
glasses and was bald – flibber lips we
called him then. Beaten by a girl

they say, in a most horrendous way,
and – well, in the end, slid smoothly
round the S bend of history. I guess
you cannot be too flushed with what

we see as your success, so all the
very best Dear John! Tho’ I’m glad
you’re gone; make no mistake, I’m
pleased as punch and take delight in

making light and pithy puns about
deflated dreams. Look mate, I’m out
to lunch on your defeat, won’t be in
for many weeks to beast inflated
claims of what you said you’d done.

Last Living Liberal, the

Would the last living Liberal please
turn out the lights, switch Malcolm
Turnbull off & go to sleep. Your night
of long knives ceased in a whimper.

Severed heads no-longer bleed; in a
quaint and antique rite you drained
your lifeblood on election night. A
hegemony has ended, comprende!

In case you missed it friend, the end
of Liberal rule was what ensued. I’d
say your crudely papered guise wore
thin, failing to survive in wiser times.

Your creed recites inalienable rights
for freedom’s core belief, start believing
then, leave off the whingeing please,
feel free to dribble off to sleep...

Survival Room

Old ‘Ironbar’ – Wilson Tuckey, MP, disgraced
himself again today; when asked to stand and
face the Stolen Generation in Australia-wide
apology said he wouldn’t and he wasn’t sorry
in the least! Wasn’t wishy-washy bi-partisan,
contrite or gave a damn about their plight.

The Federal Member for O’Connor (WA) is a
hard act to swallow – indeed, representing
callowness and the reddest of redneck ideas
ever seen in a long-serving politician. Yet he
is the last of the Mohicans, a dour survivor
of a soured and grimly chequered past.

Still, it makes a nice change from inveterate
liars who populate his party. Ironbar earned
his laurels with a piece of steel cable and an
assault on an Aborigine. Convicted but not
mortified, free to symbolize reprehensible
behaviour – representation larger than life.

Wilson’s views may be too extreme and anti
indigene for some but at least you know what
you get. Although it does suggest O’Connor
might not be all that nice a place to live in.
There wouldn’t be survival room enough for
all of him and the least Liberal part of me.
